All-on-x implants sound a bit mysterious. Perhaps like the beginning of a dental math equation. But in reality, all-on-x implants are a great solution for full tooth loss. At Hite Family Dentistry, four to six strategically placed implants can replace an entire arch of missing teeth. Sometimes known as permanent dentures, these implants offer years of stability, comfort, and a natural appearance.

If you’re experiencing the following, all-on-x implants in Edwardsville, IL, might be the answer for you:

  • Dentures that slip while eating or talking
  • Complete or near-complete tooth loss
  • The prospect of full-arch extractions
  • Being told you need implants for every missing tooth

What All-on-X Implants Actually Are

The all-on-x phrase describes an approach to dental implants in which a full set of replacement teeth are placed on several precisely located implants. The “x” simply refers to how many implants are used in this process, usually four to six, depending on the condition of the jawbone. Using all-on-x is a general way to talk about the implant procedure, without specifying how many implants will be used.

You might see this procedure referred to as all-on-4 implants or all-on-6 implants. Just know that the number specifies how many implants are used.

A traditional implant strategy for multiple missing teeth includes an implant for each individual tooth. Fewer implants with all-on-x means faster healing, fewer procedures, and cost-effectiveness. There are several other important benefits. Let’s walk through them.

Three Key Benefits of All-on-X Implants

Have you experienced a lack of stability with traditional dentures? Are you fed up with ongoing sore spots from ill-fitting dentures? Do dentures not look right when you smile? All-on-x implants have several benefits over dentures, including:

  • Stability: no slipping or shifting while eating or speaking
  • Comfort: feels like natural teeth
  • Natural appearance: custom-made to match your facial structure

Dentures that sit on top of the gums also don’t prevent jawbone loss. With all-on-x implants, the jawbone fuses with the implants in a process that helps prevent bone loss.

One study had researchers following people with all-on-4 implants over an extended period of time and found that the implants had a high survival rate of 99.2 percent at the 10-year follow-up.
