And, we are always careful to make even the most complex treatment comfortable for our patients.
Periodontal / Gum Disease Treatment
Periodontal disease – commonly called gum disease – is a serious health issue. Most people are not even aware they have it, but untreated, it can lead to tooth loss. Gum disease has also been linked to serious health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, premature births, and even pancreatic and oral cancers.
With regular dental exams, we can detect signs of gum disease early, and treat it before it becomes a health issue.
Sometimes a cavity is so deep that it reaches the pulp, or nerve, of the tooth. In these instances, we recommend a root canal, which repairs the damage and allows you to retain your natural tooth. We’ll place a dental crown over your tooth to protect it, and restore it to its natural beauty.
We will always do everything reasonable to save natural teeth, but sometimes the healthiest option is to extract them. If you have teeth that are non-restorable, we’ll recommend removing those teeth and replacing them with a partial denture, bridge, or a dental implant.
We’ll discuss which replacement option will be best for your situation. We do everything we can to make sure you’re comfortable with the process and happy with the results.
Wisdom Tooth Extractions
Wisdom teeth, or the “third molars,” emerge around the ages of 17 – 24, and may erupt only partially, erupt in the wrong direction, or remain impacted. If your wisdom teeth show signs of not coming in properly, we may recommend extracting them.
Emergency Dental Care
If you have a broken or knocked-out tooth, or severe mouth pain, call us right away. If your dental emergency happens during normal business hours, we’ll have you come in immediately.
If it’s after hours, call 314-330-8687. Dr. Hite will discuss your condition, and then determine the next step. He will either help you get comfortable until we open in the morning, or he’ll meet you at our office. If the emergency is severe, he may recommend you go the nearest emergency room.
If you’re having chronic headaches and/or jaw pain due to clenching or grinding your teeth at night, we may recommend a custom-fit night guard. A night guard cushions your teeth and eases the pressure on your jaw, so you wake up without painful headaches. If you’re also grinding your teeth, a well-fitted night guard can protect your teeth from damage.
If you snore, wake up gasping, have frequent headaches, or fatigue, you may have sleep apnea. This is a condition that most commonly affects people who are overweight, older, male, and smokers, though it can happen to anyone. With sleep apnea, you may stop breathing for 10 – 20 seconds, hundreds of times each night. This is dangerous and unhealthy, but for many, it can be treated with dental devices that keep your airway open, allowing you to sleep peacefully.
TMJ and TMD
Hite Family Dentistry treats temporomandibular joint disorders – TMD – which can cause pain in your jaw, face, neck and head. These disorders may be due to an injury, arthritis, stress, or problems with your occlusion, or bite. Sometimes it develops from a dental issue, such as missing teeth or uneven tooth surfaces. We will determine the exact cause of your TMD so we can provide the most effective treatment.
